SMARTRENAMER HELP / Reference

All 20 naming rules

What each rule does, its main settings, conversion examples, scope, and important limitations.

For Mac version 1.0 (release preparation) · Updated: October 31, 2026

Control names are described in English; key Japanese UI labels are included to help you find them in the current app.

Rules run from top to bottom

Use Add (追加) in the right pane or search for a rule. Toggle rules with their checkboxes. Each rule’s menu can duplicate, move, or delete it. Each enabled rule receives the name produced by the previous one.

ScopeWhat it changes
Base name (拡張子を除く)The name without its extension; the extension is preserved.
Extension only (拡張子のみ)The extension without the leading dot.
Full name (名前全体)The complete name, including extension.

Not every rule has the same scope controls. Check the central preview for the combined result, rather than relying on a rule’s stand-alone example.

Replace text · 文字列を置換

Replace matching text, or leave the replacement empty to remove it.

Main settings: Search mode, find text, replacement, occurrence, case sensitivity, and scope.

report_final.pdf → report.pdf

Literal mode searches for the exact text. Wildcards and regular expressions have special syntax.

Insert text · 文字列を挿入

Insert fixed text at the start, end, or a relative position. Name and date tokens can also be used.

Main settings: Text, position, reference text, and scope.

photo.jpg → trip_photo.jpg

Choose whether insertion is relative to the base name, extension, or full name.

Delete text · 文字列を削除

Remove a fixed number of characters, a relative range, or matched text.

Main settings: Deletion method, count or reference text, search mode, and scope.

Xphoto.jpg → photo.jpg

For deletion before or after a reference, check whether the reference itself is included.

Letter case · 大文字・小文字

Adjust English letter case and word styles such as camelCase or snake_case.

Main settings: Conversion style and scope.

my photo.jpg → My Photo.jpg

The chosen word style may also change separators. Check the final preview.

Character width · 半角・全角

Convert kana, letters and digits, symbols, or spaces between half-width and full-width.

Main settings: Direction, character groups, and scope.

ガイド.txt → ガイド.txt

To change only kana, deselect the other character groups.

Hiragana / katakana · ひらがな・カタカナ

Convert Japanese kana between hiragana and katakana.

Main settings: Direction and scope.

さくら.txt → サクラ.txt

This does not convert kanji to kana. Use Romaji for romanized readings.

Romaji · ローマ字に変換

Romanize Japanese text. Kanji readings can be estimated using Japanese text analysis on the Mac.

Main settings: Hepburn, Kunrei, or Nihon-shiki; long vowels; word separator; case; kanji reading estimation; scope.

カメラ.jpg → kamera.jpg

Readings of proper nouns and names are estimates. Check and correct them with a later replacement rule.

Unicode normalization · Unicode 正規化

Normalize composed characters and compatibility forms.

Main settings: NFC, NFD, NFKC, NFKD, and scope.

NFC can compose compatible decomposed character sequences.

NFKC and NFKD can change compatibility characters as well. Inspect symbols and character forms carefully.

Whitespace · 空白の整理

Trim surrounding spaces, collapse repeated spaces, remove them, or replace them.

Main settings: Trim, collapse, remove all, replacement text, and scope.

my photo.txt → my_photo.txt

Combine settings carefully: removing all whitespace leaves nothing for a later replacement.

Pad existing numbers · 数字の桁揃え

Add leading zeroes to existing numeric groups.

Main settings: Width, all / first / last number, and scope.

img1.jpg → img001.jpg

This does not change numeric values or order, and does not truncate numbers already wider than the setting.

Limit name length · 文字数の制限

Limit characters or UTF-8 bytes, trimming the start, end, or middle.

Main settings: Character limit, byte limit, trimming position, omission marker, and scope.

Trim an overly long name and optionally add an omission marker.

Zero disables that particular limit. Japanese characters can use several UTF-8 bytes each.

Add a sequence · 連番を付ける

Add a new number according to the preview order.

Main settings: Start, step, width, position, separator, number prefix/suffix, and restart per folder.

photo.jpg → 001_photo.jpg

Set the numbering order first. To build the entire name, use a template. Excluding a row can leave a gap.

Renumber · 連番を振り直す

Replace an existing numeric match with a fresh sequence.

Main settings: Number pattern (regular expression), start, step, width, restart per folder, and scope.

photo9.jpg → photo001.jpg

Check the pattern does not match another number such as a date. Use number padding when values should stay the same.

Add a date · 日付を付ける

Insert the current, creation, modification, or photo capture date.

Main settings: Date source, format, position, and separator.

photo.jpg → 20261030_photo.jpg

Capture date falls back to creation, then modification date. Check the actual selected date in file details.

Extension · 拡張子

Change, add, remove, lowercase, or uppercase the final extension.

Main settings: Operation and replacement or added extension.

photo.JPG → photo.jpg

Changing the extension does not convert the image, audio, or document format.

Sanitize names · 使えない文字を整理

Clean names for macOS, Windows compatibility, URL safety, or ASCII-only use.

Main settings: Standard, replacement, collapse repeated replacements, trim dots/spaces, and scope.

Use Windows compatibility before sharing with Windows users.

Read remaining reserved-name and hidden-file warnings. A compatible name does not convert the file format.

Repair garbled names · 文字化けを直す

Try to repair file names damaged by an encoding mismatch.

Main settings: Automatic estimation or encoding pair, and scope.

Try repairing names garbled after extracting an archive.

Not every original name can be recovered. This changes names, not the encoding of file contents.

Template · テンプレート

Build a name from the current name, sequence, dates, parent folder, and metadata.

Main settings: Template, start, step, restart per folder, and scope.

{n:3}_{name} → 001_写真.jpg

Missing metadata becomes empty; unknown tokens remain visible. Avoid duplicate extensions.

Names from a list · 一覧ファイルから

Use text lines in order, or an old-name to new-name mapping.

Main settings: List file, mode, delimiter, header, encoding, and scope.

IMG_0001.JPG → 運動会_001.jpg

Line order follows the preview order. Mappings try the full name and then the base name. Unmatched mappings stay unchanged.

JavaScript (Pro) · スクリプト

Return a new name from a JavaScript rename function. Requires Pro.

Main settings: JavaScript source and scope.

return name.toUpperCase();

This uses JavaScriptCore, not a browser or Node.js. Browser and Node APIs are unavailable.

A short JavaScript example (Pro)

function rename(name, ext, index, info) {
  return name.toUpperCase() + "_" + (index + 1);
}

Use base-name scope to preserve the extension. index starts at 0; adding 1 produces 1 for the first file. info includes path, parent, index, indexInDirectory, count, isDirectory, and available size, created, modified, and metadata values. Timestamps are Unix seconds.

This is JavaScriptCore, with no document, window, require, or Node.js file APIs. Check the script and final preview before execution.
