Technology overview
smartRenamer transforms, validates, and executes file name changes locally on a Mac. This page records the technologies and processing approach used by version 1.0. For operating instructions, visit the help center.
How renaming works
- Rules apply from top to bottom, passing each intermediate name to the next rule. The app, automation, and command-line tools share a Swift core.
- Before execution, the planner computes old and new names and checks duplicate targets, existing-file collisions, empty names, invalid characters, and UTF-8 length.
- Swaps and case-only changes use a two-stage operation via temporary names.
- Successful file name changes are recorded locally. Undo attempts to restore names from those records. Execution and undo report results per file; partial success is possible.
The help explains rule order, preview versus execution targets, and limitations after another app changes files. History is not a backup of file contents.
Main technologies
- Swift, SwiftUI, and AppKit: transformation logic and the Mac interface.
- Foundation: strings, files, dates, and NSRegularExpression matching.
- Core Foundation CFStringTokenizer: Japanese word analysis and estimated kanji readings, combined with the app’s kana-to-romaji and romanization-system adjustments.
- Image I/O and AVFoundation: EXIF and audio/video metadata.
- JavaScriptCore: execution of Pro JavaScript naming functions, without browser or Node.js APIs.
- App Intents: Shortcuts integration. StoreKit: in-app purchases and entitlement checks.
- App Sandbox and security-scoped bookmarks: access to user-authorized folders and reuse of that permission.
Apple frameworks are used as Mac platform capabilities. The current Swift package definition adds no external package dependencies. Results and metadata availability depend on macOS, file formats, permissions, and other conditions.
Local processing
File name and content transformations run on your Mac. The app does not send files to a cloud AI naming service. Kanji readings and garbled-name repair include estimates and may not match your intention; review the preview before execution.
