SMARTRENAMER HELP / Recipes

Rename by task

Practical steps for Japanese text, numbering, dates, templates, replacement, romaji, CSV mappings, and Windows-friendly names.

For Mac version 1.0 (release preparation) · Updated: October 31, 2026

Control names are described in English; key Japanese UI labels are included to help you find them in the current app.

Normalize Japanese width and extensions

カメラ_01.JPG → カメラ_01.jpg

  1. Start New settings and add Character width (半角・全角). Set full-width and select only Kana (カナ).
  2. Add another Character width rule, set half-width, and select only Letters and digits (英数).
  3. Add Extension (拡張子) and select lowercase.
  4. Compare the final preview before running.

Prefix photos with 001, 002, …

写真.jpg → 001_写真.jpg

  1. Add targets and set Numbering order (連番の順序).
  2. Add Add a sequence (連番を付ける): start 1, step 1, width 3.
  3. Choose Start (先頭) for position and underscore (_) for separator.
  4. Use the base-name scope, check exclusions and final numbers, then run.

Enable restart per folder when each folder should start at 001. Excluded rows can leave gaps; remove them from the list first if needed.

Pad existing numbers to three digits

img1.jpg → img001.jpg

  1. Add Pad existing numbers (数字の桁揃え).
  2. Set width to 3 and choose which numeric group to pad, such as the first.
  3. Check that other numbers, such as dates, were not changed.

Use Renumber (連番を振り直す) to assign fresh values to an existing numeric match. Padding keeps the values and order.

Add photo capture timestamps

IMG_1234.jpg → 20261030_143000_IMG_1234.jpg when that is the available capture time.

  1. Add Add a date (日付を付ける), choosing Capture date / EXIF (撮影日時(EXIF)).
  2. Set format to yyyyMMdd_HHmmss, position to start, and separator to underscore.
  3. Check the selected file’s Metadata and actual timestamp before running.

If EXIF capture time is missing, this rule uses creation time, then modification time. Do not assume every prefixed timestamp is an EXIF date.

Combine a parent folder, date, and sequence

For the first file in a folder named 旅行, modified on October 30, 2026, build 旅行_2026-10-30_001.jpg.

  1. Add Template (テンプレート).
  2. Use the base-name scope (拡張子を除く) and enter {parent}_{mdate:yyyy-MM-dd}_{n:3}.
  3. Set start to 1, step to 1, and restart per folder if needed.
  4. Keep the existing extension; do not add .{ext} in this scope.

See templates and metadata for other tokens.

Remove “_final”

report_final.pdf → report.pdf

  1. Add Replace text (文字列を置換) in Literal (通常) mode.
  2. Find _final and leave the replacement empty.
  3. Use base-name scope and select the intended occurrence.

Literal matching also finds _final inside a name. To remove it only at the end, use regex mode with _final$.

Turn “第01話” into “ep01”

アニメ_第01話_1080p.mp4 → アニメ_ep01_1080p.mp4

  1. Add Replace text and choose Wildcard (ワイルドカード).
  2. Find 第*話 and replace with ep\1.
  3. Use base-name scope. If the name contains several matches, review the occurrence setting.

The first capture, 01, is reused through \1. The surrounding text stays intact.

Romanize kana and tidy spaces

カメラ.jpg → kamera.jpg

  1. Add Romaji (ローマ字に変換). Choose the system, long-vowel treatment, word separator, and case.
  2. Add Whitespace (空白の整理) or Letter case (大文字・小文字) afterward if needed.
  3. For kanji, check readings of names, places, and proper nouns individually.

Kanji readings are estimates. Add a replacement rule afterward to enforce particular spellings.

Rename from an Excel / CSV mapping

Create two columns for old and new names in Excel, then save as CSV or tab-separated text. Direct .xlsx import is not supported.

Old nameNew name
IMG_0001.JPG運動会_001.jpg
IMG_0002.JPG運動会_002.jpg
  1. Add Names from a list (一覧ファイルから), then select the mapping with Choose (選ぶ…).
  2. Use old-name → new-name mapping mode (旧名 → 新名の対応表).
  3. For CSV, enter a comma as delimiter. Enable the header option (先頭行は見出し) if present.
  4. Match the encoding; the samples below use UTF-8.
  5. Use full-name scope (名前全体) because these new names include extensions.
  6. Check that old names match actual names and no expected row is unchanged.

Make names easier to use on Windows

Add Sanitize names (使えない文字を整理) and choose Windows compatibility (Windows 互換). Review replacement text, collapsing repeated replacements, and trimming surrounding dots and spaces.

If a Windows reserved-name warning remains, add fixed text or choose another name. This only adjusts naming; it does not convert the file format.
